The drug enters target and binds to specific receptors, initiating many complex reactions that are responsible for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Gatifloxacin is one of the fourth generation fluoroquinolone. It acts as an antibacterial agent which inhibits the DNA gyrase. The other drug which is the Dexamethasone is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory eye preparation.

The drug is used in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis which is caused by susceptible strains of the microorganisms such as aerobic gram- positive and gram- negative bacteria such as S. aureus, S. pneumonia, S. epidermidis, S. mitis, Comyebacterium propinquulm and Haemophillus influenzae. The drug is also indicated for reducing redness, soreness and swelling in the eye.

The most frequently reported side effects are chemosis, dry eye, conjunctival hemorrhage, eye discharge, eye irritation, eye pain, eyelid edema, headache, taste disturbance and reduced visual acuity.

If you have been told by your physician that you have history or background hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone/ Gatifloxacin, better not to take this drug in order to prevent some allergic reactions. The drug is also contraindicated with infections, especially tuberculosis, fungal infections, amebiasis, vaccinia and varicella, and antibiotic-resistant infections, allergy to any components of the preparation used. Use the drug cautiously for patients with renal or hepatic disease, hypothyroidism, and ulcerative colitis with impending perforation, diverticulitis, active or latent peptic ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease, congestive heart failure and hypertension.

It is important for patients who are taking this drug to be aware on what are necessary precautions to take while using this medication. It is important that patient should stop drinking alcoholic beverages since it may reduce the effectiveness of the drug. Avoid taking higher dosage which is not prescribed by the physician. Patients should be advised not to wear contact lenses if they show signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis. Administer the drug while lying down or tilting the head backward and look at the ceiling. Warm the solution in hand for several minutes. Wait for at least 10 minutes before using any other eye preparations. After using the medication, eyes will become more sensitive to light. Report to the healthcare provider any worsening of the condition, pain, itching, swelling of the eye, failure of the condition to improve after 1 week.

To determine the correct dosage and course of medication, always consult your doctor and strictly follow the prescription and instructions you are provided. When using the ophthalmic solution in adults and pediatric patients, Instill 1 or 2 drops into the conjunctival sac every 1 hour during the day and every 2 hour during the night; after a favorable response, reduce dose to 1 drop every 4 hour and then 1 drop 3-4 times a day.
